Costumes – inside look

Here are some pictures that show how my costumes are build and how they look on the inside:

Here is an example how my paddings works – the padding is put on via different type of straps, so it avoids giving that „cushion“ look when moving around. The fur goes over it and once you move it looks really smooth. It’s also completely washable.

I use either a zipper and magnets or big snap buttons to close the back of a head. Usually I try to hide it withing a markings like it is shown here. The Back of the head does not hold anything, thus there is no strain on this closing mechanism. Instead the front of the mask is hold with three different straps and padding, that you can adjust to perfectly fit your size.

The paddings keep the sweat away from the inside of the mask and you can easily toss them in the washing machine after wearing your costume.

This is an example for a transition between the neck and the body of a costume – there are hidden magnets that pull it back into place, when you move around, so the markings always fit.

When I talk about a hidden zipper, this is what I mean – a zipper that is usually hidden within a marking and closes with snap buttons. You can get into your costume by yourself, since the zipper is in the front but at the same time it’s not visible like a regular front zipper usually is.

Here’s a video of one of my latest hidden zippers and how they work.

Here is a look at the inside of a head – I try to line every head if possible with water resistant fabric, to make cleaning easier. No open seams or visible foam.

How do I make sure a body fits perfectly?

As a seamstress I decided to make bodies and costumes the same way clothes are made – with one or several fittings! Usually customers can visit my workspace and get a fitting. Depending on the type of work I first use cheap material to make a mockup that is then fitted to the customer. Every movement like sitting down, walking, jumping and sitting will be tested to see how much room for movement is needed. Once everybody is satisfied I transfer the exact measurements onto the final material and create a perfectly fitting costume. Depending on the complexity some costumes need a second fitting. All of these are included in the price and I make sure each piece is exactly like expected. Different people move different in their suit and everybody has a different type of „feeling“ how tight/loose they want their suit which a Tapedummy alone will never be able to supply.
